BOOKS AND DOCUMENTS FROM HISTORIC SOUTHERN ESTATES AT CASE’S JULY 6-7 AUCTION

KNOXVILLE, Tenn.— Case’s Summer Auction, happening July 6-7 at the company’s gallery in Knoxville, Tennessee, features 1,086 lots of books, documents and historical items, along with American and European art and antiques.
Highlighted in this sale is a collection of books from the historic Pinckney family of Runnymede plantation, outside Charleston, South Carolina, including a 5-volume group of J.J. Audubon’s Birds of America, Octavo Edition, and a 40 volume set of The British Essayists, 1823, both containing bookplates of South Carolina attorney general John Julius Pringle, Sr. (1753-1843) and a 2-volume set of American Ornithology by Wilson and Bonaparte, published 1871. There is also T-3 1861 $100 First Issue Confederate Montgomery Note (PCGS Very Fine 30); a Star Atlas, 1936, by D.F. Brocchi of Harvard University; a Colton’s 1856 world atlas; and a number of Charleston-related historical and art books.
Offerings from other consignors include a Cormac McCarthy signed first edition box set of The Passenger and Stella Maris; plus a very scarce first edition Mixology book, Barflies and Cocktails by Harry McElhone of the famous Harry’s New York Bar in Paris, which served drinks to Hemingway, Fitzgerald, and Bogart. There is also a signed first edition Helen Keller Journal (Association copy), a Francisco Madero signed copy of La Sucesion Presidencial en 1910 (2nd edition, 1909), and a Leon Trotsky signed copy of The Revolution Betrayed (1st American edition). History lovers will find a rare 1805 printing on silk of Thomas Jefferson’s Inaugural speech, along with 2 John Overton signed early Tennessee statehood documents, slave trade documents, a rare 1861 U.S. Grant broadside proclamation to the citizens of Paducah, KY; Civil War era CDVs, and a 13 star Civil War era American Naval Flag. Dating from 1838 is a Cherokee Land Lottery book, containing various maps and a list of citizens who, following a series of lotteries, were awarded land (in 160 acres lots) that had been appropriated by the state of Georgia after the forcible removal of the Cherokee in 1838. And there is a letter archive relating to the Thomas Lewis family of Boston, along with 4 Theodor de Bry early Florida and Virginia Native American prints.
