H. Bradley Martin was a collector of epic proportions. Only a very small part of his collecting interests were directed to the Americana field. Nevertheless, when his 48 lots of Americana came to the auction block on January 31st, 1990 every lot sold and the total realized was a staggering $4,394,775 or an average of $91,557.00 a lot. Included in the sale was George Washington's own copy of the Federalist which brought $1,430,000 that day. A folio broadside of the first printing of the Declaration of Independence brought $1,595,000. |
