Source Title | The Library of the Late Ogden Goelet of New York, Part One and Two |
Description | Mr. Ogden Goelet died in 1897 on the Mayflower and his books were sold in 1935. There must be more to the story and there is. This Mayflower was his private yacht and his books were not dispersed until almost 40 years after his death in two auctions of which this is Part One. Mr Goelet was in fact a contemporary collector with George Brinley and Henry C. Murphy during the period following the end of the civil war. He collected widely in the style of the renaissance man. He was equally at home with important fiction as he was with materials documenting the development and progress of America. His library was much smaller than his famous book collecting contempories but it was nevertheless remarkable. |
