Guggenheim was a German publisher and founder of the German Book Association in the 1930s. It enabled him to avoid confrontation with the Nazi regime despite being Jewish. The organization simply ignored the Nazis. He traveled to America in 1938 where friends warned him not to return. Instead, he went to Switzerland, brought his family there, then moved to Britain and finally the United States in 1940.
